Granite Lake Backpacking Trip 7-23 to 7-25

Granite Lake and the surrounding environs are botanically and geologically splendid....but I am currently staffing Camp Kurty and do not have the energy to blog our backpacking trip in detail.

Us standing in the snow (!) enjoying the views from Seven-Up peak; the snow capped peak to my right is Mt. Shasta.

The late spring and cool summer made for lush meadows, abundant wildflowers, and sparkling streams to drink from.
Ross posing near a stream with leopard lilies and cobra lilies on the banks.

Beautiful fragrant wild azaleas.

Our main creek crossings.

Snow plant.
Cobra Lily bog.

Washington Lily.

Close up of the elusive carnivorous Cobra Lily.
Scenes from and around camp.

Rosser's cedar tree!!!
Relaxed people at the end of an awesome weekend!

After Ruth Lake....

Saturday July 16, was Dan and Em's wedding in Goodyear's Bar. Ross and I rushed up to kayak the N. Yuba (flowing at 1000cfs--unheard of in July!). We had a bit of a delay due to forgetting crucial gear, luckily we were able to borrow a paddle and enjoy one of my favorite runs. If you look closely at Ross's paddle above you will notice that it is quite a retro model:)
Ross running the Water Gage. After kayaking we cleaned up and put on our party clothes.

The beautiful bride and handsome groom drinking from the wedding vase (jug?:). It was a beautiful day to celebrate.

Tuesday 7/19, Mumphie and I took bart into the city to view the Stein Family (Gertrude's that is) collection of modern art, along with the permanent installations. It was a balmy 70 degrees and another beautiful day.
Mumphie outside of MOMA.
Mumphie next to her favorite work, "Gentlemen Dogs".

Me next to an abstract piece that is representative of nothing by Clyfford Still.
A piece by a name that many will recognize, Rene Magrite.
Stay tuned for backpacking in the Trinity Alps Wilderness....

Family Camping at Ruth Lake

On Wednesday July 14, Scott-Jamie-Izze-Mickey, Phil & Sandy, and Katya and I convened at campsite 31 at Ruth Lake Recreation campground for a few days of fun. There was lots of fishing. Katya caught her first, second, and third fish. Mickey and Izze practiced casting and kissed a few fish. We played in camp: hula hoop, wiffle ball, gin rummy, big wheels, bouncing the ball, kayaking, and swimming.
The evenings were cool and the mornings chilly.

Scott's trophy bass-- 20" large mouth bass!
Katya with her 2nd fish and Jamie with a fish on her line too.
Kayaking on the lake we saw osprey and their nests, and a bald eagle.
The nights were fairly bright as we had a almost full moon. The photo below was taken at 10:30pm.
A parting group shot before we headed back to Chico/Paradise in order to attend Dan and Emily's beautiful wedding (in Goodyear's Bar) on Saturday.
Let's do it again next year!!!
